Meet a PSQ student!

Inspiration straight out of the building

To get a better understanding of what it's like to study game development at PlaygroundSquad here in Falun, regardless of whether you want to become a 3D graphic artist, game designer or game programmer, we have interviewed students who give their impression of what it's like to live in Falun and study games at PSQ!

Our vision

We want our students to feel at home when they spend their time at PSQ. That's why we do everything we can to make the place feel safe, secure, and fun to be at. However, it's the people that make PSQ what it is; without them, PlaygroundSquad would be nothing. It's the teachers, visitors, alumni, and current students who make the PSQ attendees the dev stars they become in the gaming industry.

What's really great about school is that it's both practical and social. We sit at workstations in large rooms where you can easily ask for help or just check out what a classmate is working on. During group projects, it's both educational and fun to discuss and figure out what creates the best experience for the person playing the game. There are also plenty of chances to hang out after school with the class!

Something I have personally had to deal with is examining whether an idea you want to implement is actually 'net-positive'. If it is reasonable to work on a feature/tooling that may not even be used, then you have to think a little and ask your peers whether they will be used or not, and get into lines of thought that actually benefit the project's results.What the teachers and the school really teach you is how a relatively simple input can make a big difference in a practical group project. It's fun, but also a little scary when a comment or opinion can shape the entire game project the following week.

So, a good friend and colleague of mine saw my artwork, and had noticed my Heavy Enthusiasm for video games as a medium. He Strongly Encouraged me to apply to a school that specializes in video game art.He recommended to me (what he thought were) the three best schools for Game Art in Sweden, and PSQ was one of them. The other two schools either required me to speak Swedish at level 2 or didn't accept international students.So, I applied to PSQ, had a nice interview with one of the teachers, Patrik, and now I'm here!

I would never have thought to describe myself as a model student during my high school days. I hate to be a 'Crude-Dude', but save for a select few subjects, I was entirely uninterested in what my teachers had to say. I simply wasn't interested. But now, for the First time in my life, I find myself feeling comfortable in an educational setting. The teachers, students, and curriculum here at PSQ are all great! Of course, nothing is perfect in life, and where human beings congregate, differences in opinion and expression tend to follow. However, the positives FAR outweigh the negatives in this scenario, and I'm very confident in saying this has been my best educational experience yet! I love the School!!!!
