Our 1st-year students ended the year in the best way possible - they had their Final Presentation of their 1st Game Project! All the games were awesome (of course) but let's take a closer look at each of the games: GRAPPLEVANIA Made by Burning Ninjas Make your way forward through a village that has been infected with hellish demons to end it all! Battle with your chain-sickle in this action/platformer game. Have fun in this Ninja Gaiden and Shovel Knight-inspired platformer g

If you want to check out our awesomely talented 2nd-year students, click here! 👈 There were three projects, and we've been so psyched to tell you all about them. Let's get to it: Twisted Heights created by The Unbalanced This is a multiplayer puzzle game made in Unity for PC. The team wanted to create an innovative and creative idea that focused on
Last Friday was a big day for our 2nd-year Artists students. They had been working on some personal projects for about 3 weeks, and the presentation was due last Friday - and WHAT a presentation it was. The project was to create an environment of your own choice. It could be just as big (or small) as you wanted. Some of the students realized that it is not time that is short, but it is I who must work faster towards the deadline. Just like it is in the real world in the gamin

Where do you work right now? -I’m currently working at a Swedish gaming company by the name of Toca Boca as a Quality Assurance Tester in Stockholm. Where we make applications for kids with the “power of play” in mind. I am working on an application called Toca Life: World which is probably best described as a virtual dollhouse. I really enjoy working for Toca Boca and their playful nature. While I haven’t had the pleasure to work in the office just yet due to the pandemic, m
It's their gold presentation! Well done.
So without further ado, we present their games below. Enjoy!😍 Nuclear Opera Four sopranos enter, one tenor leaves. In this Brawler game you play as an opera singer with an explosively powerful voice against up to three of your friends, in a game of King of the hill. The four of you will fight over who gets to dominate the top of the stage by using the explosive soundwaves of your characters voices to knock down one another. When the r

It's that time of the year again when the gaming industry gathers (well, digitally this year) to hand out awards to the games released this year that made a huge difference in the gaming industry. (Photos belongs to: The Game Awards) The Last of Us Part II won the biggest prize of this years ceremony. In addition to game of the year, Naughty Dog’s sequel won several other big awards throughout the night. Such as: Best direction, narrative, action/adventure game and audio desi
We're starting to miss our students a whole lot now and wanted to catch up with some of them! That's why we talked to Mikael Danielsson a Designer Student from 2018, and asked him how's he doing and what he's been up to since graduating from PlaygroundSquad. Where do you work right now?
I work at Illusion Labs located in Malmö as a Level Designer. My main job is to create levels using our in-house level editor. I also script different gameplay scenarios for our game projects
Our second-year students have just finished their final game projects! Kudos to everyone who put it together.🎮 Now they're heading out on an exciting internship. We are super proud of them and want to present some of the work that our talented students have created. Concussed is an intergalactic first-person rocket jumping game like no other! You need to claim control points for your own team and prevent the enemy team from doing the same. To do this, you are equipped with a
We're starting to miss our students who graduated this summer a whole lot now and wanted to catch up with some of them! That's why we talked to Torsten Lareke, a Designer Student from 2018, and asked him how's he doing and what he's been up to since graduating from PlaygroundSquad. Hi Torsten! 👋👋👋 Where and what do you work with right now? Right now, I'm working at King, the company I did my internship at. I got hired after the internship concluded. I've been working here
PlaygroundSquad had the absolute pleasure of having Adam Mayes here on an e-visit. Adam Mayes is a Senior Lecturer within Game Design and used to Subject Responsible for Game Design at Gotland Campus by Uppsala University. Adam has been in the industry for about 20 years, spanning PS1/PC; worked on WAP games and designed the first solo game that broke the 5-minute play barrier. PlaygroundSquads' design students (and other students) were invited to listen in to Adam Mayes talk
Let me introduce Simon Andersen! Simon studies Level Design at The Game Assembly Malmö and is currently doing his level design internship remotely at Respawn Entertainment. Simon’s curiosity for level design has led him to explore level design in multiple game genres as well as his level submission for Human: Fall Flat won first prize in a level design competition arranged by Curve Digital and No Brake Games. Seeing how the pandemic has changed the industry with increased rem
Yesterday was a wonderful day. All of the PSQ students came back from summer break, and the 1-year students finally got to see our school IRL for the first time! Since the COVID-19 Pandemic hit hard during the last weeks of the application process, a lot of the applicants didn't have the chance or opportunity to visit PSQ before applying. That's why it was especially fun to see everyone here since it was a special time for a lot of you! The building has been so empty since ea
It’s been a while! Time is a weird concept here having worked remotely for over 4 months. If you have followed the situation in the US, COVID-19 cases are looking especially bad in California. A lot of locations are still (again) closed like gyms and restaurants are still only allowing takeout. Some allow social distance eating if there is an outdoor patio. At the same time I am definitely getting more accustomed to the situation feeling more comfortable working from home now
Narrative Designer is a relatively new sub-group in the well established Game Design field with focus on narrative. It is however a pretty modern title, and hence it’s not always easy to know what it’s about or how it is defined between studios. To quote Wikipedia “There are no agreed-upon industry-wide definitions of what exactly comprises a narrative designer’s responsibilities.” What I know about Narrative Design I have learnt from being a Narrative Designer at Respawn. I
This year is turbulent to say the least. The tragic day of George Floyd's death has sent ripples across not only the US but pretty much the whole world. As EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson starts his message to the employees “We are in the midst of a global outcry for change.” It is (always) too late, but there is no better time than now to raise awareness, listen, learn and most of all, take action and never stop doing all of this. As LA and California is very diverse, this wave of ra
